This Pole is a rendition of my Grandfathers pole that stood in her home village of Tongass.
Three stories are represented on this pole. First, the human being on top tells the story of the Raven Stealing the Light. Next, the Raven and Mink stand on their host, the whale, who provided a great adventure. In this story two visitors got greedy and caused the death of the whale but Raven and Mink survived to tell their history and share it with their human saviours. The third story expressed in this totem pole involves the Frog Princess and her children on the back of the whale.
This totem shows our history and our understanding of the world and speaks of times when things were bit as they are now. As time goes on it seems the more we learn the less we know.
I enjoyed carving this pole and will continue to articulate my family history through carving.
