"It has been told that long before any man or woman walked the earth, the sky opened up and twelve separate humans fell from the heavens. They fell into these areas of what is now Salish territory: Cowichan, Saanich, Quamichan, and Mount Prevost. The first to fall was a man named Sylalutsa. He brought gift-giving ceremonies, fishing technologies, and spirit dances. His brother Stutsun fell second; and the rest who fell became the Salish people.
"This box depicts the version of the creation story that I was told. The lid represents the opening sky, the ends represent the first two people who fell, and the front and back represent the others who followed."
-John Marston
