"Heron was the master carver. He also used his skills to produce new tools and special wedges with which he made canoes. He was famed for his totem poles that were reputed to be so realistic that at a glance they would seem to wink at you. There is an old Haida quote which has been attributed to Heron originally: 'There is nothing better than a well carved object.' This was often used by Bill Reid, and of course I relate to that as well as I strive to achieve higher and higher quality in my work. This carving also shows the human face of Heron, who at times could appear as a strong, skilled man when it was convenient to perform particular jobs."
