"In 1975 Davidson made his first three-colour print, introducing the traditional blue-green colour sometimes seen in Haida work. Although this colour is generally reserved for the tertiary areas of a work, it was used for the primary form line of the print. The design was based on his 1969 Christmas card, a split dogfish, which he refined and improved, but the artist was not satisfied with the result and never released the completed edition of 300.
"Still feeling that it was a strong design, Davidson again turned to the dogfish motif two years later, this time eliminating the use of blue-green. He cut the required screens, had the design commercially printed, and released the edition the following year. He had wanted to simply give them away to the first seventy-five guests arriving at the opening of his recent exhibition, but he allowed outside influences to change his mind."
