Artist Statement: New Visions

In the spirit of spindle whorls, this circular Coast Salish design alludes to an ancient stone spindle whorl while simultanously depicting the eyes of contemporary Coast Salish artists---redefining Coast Salish art. The ovals inside the eyes also create a visual pun of oval shaped silhouettes of human heads, while the lower eyelids define hands reaching towards the corner of each quadrant of the circular form. The eyes and human heads and outstretched arms sybolize contemporary Coast Salish artists inspiring each other and redefining contemporary Coast Salish art.
Towards the middle of the design are c-forms floating away from the center of the circle. These circles are no longer centeRED and no longer the spindle holes of traditional spindle whorls. They are eccentric circles within angular lines--the angular lines alluding to the geometric forms of Coast Salish weavings--cultural productions beyond spindle w(h)orl(d)s.
