Artist Statement: humans, frogs, and salmon wHOLE:p(art:)
In the spirit of spindle whorls, this abstract Coast Salish design depicts fOUR (visual punning;) humans, four frogs, and four salmon. The four frogs are formed with mouths with nostrils, while the salmon share the mouths of the frogs on the bottom side of the mouth. In the center of the design, symbolizing anthropocentrism, is a human face with a small mouth (symbolizing human ARTifICE AGE and global warming caused by human voraciousness caused by human vision which is askew and cock eyed and cocky humans thinking that we are "humane" and superior to animals. The visual punning in the de(sign:) symbolizes the interconnectness of lIFE on the circle of the EARth. While humans beings cause primitive pollution, depletion of natural resources, and ecosystem destruction, animals--in tHEIR natural state-- are guardian spirits of the circle of the earth.
