Artist Statement: "In the spirit of spindle whorls, this circular Coast Salish design depicts a Coast Salish guardian spirit dancer encircled by his guardian spirit. The movements of his dance and the words of his song subtly suggest the source of his power, his guardian spirit. In keeping with Coast Salish guardian spirit traditions, his guardian spirit, a bird, is rendered ambiguously and visually vague, and does not explicitly show a specific species of bird. This ambiguous rendering of his guardian spirit protects the power of his guardian spirit, and leaves the specific species of his guardian spirit up for interpretation by the uninitiated."
