Artist Statement: "In the spirit of spindle whorls, this circular Coast Salish design depicts two salmon heads in a circle. These two salmon heads symbolize good luck, as well as the spawning and perpetuation of salmon. In designing these two salmon, I have essentially stuck with using traditional Coast Salish design elements and principles. At the same time, I have also utilized a northern formline influence in the placing of the trigons on the left and right sides of the design. In placing this northern formline influence at the periphery of the design, I am conveying the fact that northern formline design elements and principles are peripheral to my development as a contemporary Coast Salish artist. At the same time, in placing trigons which suggest the inherent tension of northern formline design within the fluid, visual rhythym of
traditional Coast Salish art, I am comparing and contrasting these northern and southern Northwest Coast art forms."
