Artist Statement: As a contemporary Coast Salish artist I have often been intrigued by the ways in which positive and negative design principles are fundamental to all Northwest Coast art forms. In much Northwest Coast First Nations art, the interaction between positive and negative space reveals some of the inner anatomical features of the being depicted, and suggests spiRITUAL aspects of existence. With this design, I have depicted two salmon heads in large positive black space, with the tail ends of the salmon suggested by the black negative trigons and ovals in front of the salmon heads. In doing this, I am asking the viewer to have the spirit to look at dwindling salmon populations on a deeper level.
