Alcheringa - Fine Tribal Art of the Northwest Coast, Papua New Guinea, and Australia
 lessLIE ( Coast Salish ) - Double-Headed Serpent

Artist Statement: ARTIST’S STATEMENT

This Coast Salish painting was inspired by “historical” (“historical” as in when Western people began to write history) Coast Salish carved combs. In the original carved comb, as in this painting, the contrasting interplay between the positive space and the negative space of the trigons and crescents is intended to evoke serpentine motion. In Coast Salish belief, double headed animals, because of their extraordinary nature, are considered to be very powerful creatures.
