Terry Ngamandara was raised near the Cadell River in west Arnhemland, N.T., where he was taught the traditional law of the Girnimba and Garramirra people. Senior artist England Banggala in the neighbouring community of Maningrida, helped him with his painting techniques and today Terry is well known for his intricate bark paintings which quite often depict the spike rush design. The thin, green coloured spike rush covers a vast area of the Barlparnarra swampland, his traditional home. The spike rush, known as gulach, is translated into a clan design painted on the chests of participants in various sacred ceremonies, especially the initiation of young men by circumcision.
