Brolga was a human in the Dreamtime before sprouting wings and transforming into a bird in order to escape from being chased and killed by another man. The dance of the brolgas is performed in ceremony by men whose bodies are painted with the brolga design. The dancers run low flapping their arms and imitating the graceful movement of these birds. The body of the brolga shows the artist’s clan design and depicts some of the internal organs in the X-Ray style. In this print the brolga is shown with Mimi figures who inhabit the rocky escarpments of the stone country of Western Arnhem Land. Mini spirits are fragile, stick like figures who have existed since the Creation and are credited with having taught the Kunwinjku people (the Aboriginal people of Western Arnhem Land) how to hunt.
