These are some of Rick Rivet's comments about his painting Beothuk Mound 14 (2001); they are also applicable to the series of "Beothuk Mound" prints.
"A memorial image referencing the genocidal extinction over 300 years of the Beothuk native people from the island of Newfoundland, Canada. Europeans (English/French) and native people (Micmac/Inuit) were responsible. The last known survivor, Shawnawdithit, died of tuberculosis in 1829. The outline of the Beothuk canoe can be seen buried in the collaged area of the painting. The four red pieces of cloth symbolize memorial, this idea being situated within the four cardinal directions."
