Artist Statement: In the spirit of spindle whorls, this circular Coast Salish design depicts two Coast Salish guardian spirit dancers flanked by two visually vague and ambiguous birds. The two guardian spirit dancers are singing the sacRED song of their guardian spirit. As with my painting “sacRED vision,” the subtle circle inside the middle mouth is an attempt to mediate between the Coast Salish oral tradition, in which visual images are integral, and literacy.
