Artist Statement: 'On the river I was impressed by the strength of the features of the people I encountered while travelling and I wanted to capture the essence of that in a face mask. As my journey progressed and after seeing the beauty of the face painting worn by the welcome dancers in Palembei I felt inspired to add cut outs to the mask to create a similar effect. In recognition of my own heritage there is an abstract design of a kliierwhale. I wanted to honour their world where everything was made from nature by also using materials untouched by the western world.' John Marston
