Artist Statement: Art, ARTiculate, ARTicle, text and TEXTile: words with similar etymologies to think about when MEDIAting between the Coast Salish oral tradition and written text. As a contemporary Coast Salish artist engaged in such an undertaking, I have thought much about such etymologies. Written text has become so inextricably interwoven with contemporary Coast Salish culture, it is my intention to reflect this contemporary cultural reality, and to find a middle ground between the guardian spirit visions of Coast Salish traditions, and the visions of visionary artists who see the direction their cultures are going. With this design, four faces are depicted with the same sacRED, circular, middle mouth, symbolizing the oral tradition while visually echoing the letter “o,” yet rendeRED with a graphic simplicity evocative of a glyph or logo.
