Since salmon are organic beings, I wanted to design the painted salmon on this paddle to be an "organic" part of the paddle. I also wanted the design to serve a mediational function. I wanted it to effectively belong within a contemporary and traditional context. I believe that this painted paddle would look good in the contemporary conTEXT of a person's wall, or the more traditional and utilitarian context of being used by a Coast Salish paddler.
Like many other contemporary Northwest Coast artists, I also wanted the inherent aesthetic appeal of the yellow cedar to be a final part of the design. I believe that my Coast Salish ancestors recognized the inherent aestheic appeal of various wood colors and gRAINs, and for this reason, left many of their carved implements unpainted.
