Born in Prince Rupert, Haida artist Freda Diesing (b. 1925)h carved since the late 1960’s. She was one of the first students at 'Ksan, receiving instruction in sculpture and design from Bill Holm, Tony Hunt and Robert Davidson. In addition to carving and designing many masks and bowls, Freda Diesing created a large double mortuary pole for the city of Prince Rupert, and also found time to instruct young Haida and Tsimshian artists on the principles of Northwest Coast art. Freda Diesing died in 2003
