Eugene Hunt
Kwakwaka'wakw
Eugene Hunt (b. 1946) is a member of the Fort Rupert Band of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation.
Eugene is one of eight children born to Chief Thomas Hunt and Emma Hunt. Emma Hunt was the daughter of the Nuu Chah Nulth Chief and Shaman, Dr. Billy.
In the early 1960's, Eugene spent four years in Victoria carving at Thunderbird Park, Royal British Columbia Museum, under the tutelage of Mungo Martin, Henry Hunt, and Thomas Hunt. Eugene spent the next 25 years as a commercial fisherman, resuming carving in 1987. He also took up painting and is particularly known for his painted tambourine styled drums. In recent years, he has worked with his brother Calvin Hunt, John Livingston and nephew George Jr.
Eugene Hunt died in Victoria, BC in June of 2002.
