Tribe: Kwakwaka'wakw

Harold (Jackson) Alfred was born at Alert Bay, B.C. and is a member of the Kwakwaka'wakw (formerly Kwakiutl) Nation. He was born into the Namgis tribe located on north-eastern Vancouver Island. Harold observes the high standards set by the past masters and applies the same standards of quality and workmanship which are true to the Kwakwaka'wakw art form. Growing up in Alert Bay, constantly surrounded by the arts, one could not help but be influenced by the designs, carvings and poles created by the great masters of the past. As a result, Harold creates outstanding work that has a contemporary feel with a strong sense of the past while exploring new and exciting mediums.

Continuing the Kwakwaka'wakw tradition of innovation while he maintains artistic integrity, Harold works in original designs in all endeavours. Recognizing that the development of his knowledge and appreciation of the Kwakwaka'wakw art form is an ongoing process where one never stops learning, he strives to develop a distinctive style featuring line and forms which clearly depict strong traditional Kwakwaka'wakw designs.

His logo is the powerful Thunderbird which is one of the founding crests of the Namgis and is symbolic of his roots as a Namgis artist from Alert Bay. Harold presently lives in Victoria, B.C. with his wife and three beautiful children.
