Joe Wilson
Coast Salish
Joseph Wilson, born in 1967, is a member of the Cowichan Band in Duncan, BC. At the age of 16, Joe discovered an interest in Native art through inspiration from his family. He later began studying, carving, and painting under the guidance of master carver Simon Charlie. Pursuing his newfound career, Joe sought more experience by working with other artists such as Jim Gilbert, Tim Paul and Charles Elliot. Since 1984 his work has reflected his search for his own cultural identity in Coast Salish art.
Also a vocal member of his community, Wilson is also an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and is on the board of directors for Kw-am-Kw’um-S’uli – Strengthening Our Spirit.
Wilson says, “Through my leaning experiences I’ve found that I have acquired a style which I like doing and it is continuing to grow. It also allows me to express myself in many different ways and I look forward to future projects.
