Edward Joe
Coast Salish
Edward Joe was born in Ladysmith, B.C. in 1969; he now resides in Nanaimo, B.C. The rich culture Edward grew up with has been deeply influential on him and this is manifested in the artwork he creates.
Edward graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1998, with a Diploma in Fine Arts. He then went on to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he completed his Associate of Fine Arts degree in 2001. Between 2005 and 2006, Edward was enrolled in the jewellery program at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
Edward enjoys challenging himself and his artwork demonstrates his continuing exploration in creative expression.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“Amongst the many tribes on the West Coast of British Columbia, I introduce you to ancient and contemporary Coast Salish art. My acrylic paintings and limited edition prints portray traditional colours of black and red. As well, experimental approaches with vibrant and modern colouring are also portrayed.
Jewellery designing is also a medium I enjoy exploring. It helps me to reach higher levels of technique and complexity. Silver and gold metals are uniquely finished with a stone inlay or an overlay of two metals, making a depth illusion. My art is not only influenced from Salish culture but also has influences from other Northwest Coastal tribes. Mexican silver jewellery from Taxco is an example of fine inspiration. Other influences include Southwestern techniques such as Navajo and Hopi designed jewellery.
Salish art has as smooth slowing motion intended to create a calm mood. The stories, legends, and myths are depicted in many of my art pieces. Animals from the land, sea, and sky are designed in a playful manner.
My goals are not only to revive the ancient Salish art form, but also to break and redefine boundaries within it. With extensive research in museums and books, I have become passionate in learning the roots of the ancient art of the northwest Coast. Could it be that I did not choose to be an artist, but it was chosen by the creator to be one?”
