Joe Jr. Peters
Kwakwaka'wakw
Joe Peters, Jr. (b. 1960) began carving as a child. He was mainly self-taught but did receive some instruction in mask carving from Dwayne Simeon. Later, Joe was strongly influenced and inspired by the work of Beau Dick and Russell Smith, both prominent Kwakwaka'wakw carvers.
Joe Peters Jr.'s family has a long list of accomplished dancers and singers and a time honoured tradition of potlatches. His grandparents, Jonathan and Mary Whonnock, were jailed for giving potlatches during the period when they were banned. Joe died tragically at the age of 34. The works of this fine artist, primarily masks, rattles, bowls and model poles are represented in many private and public collections.
