Joseph Kandimbu
Iatmul Tambanum,
Joseph Kandimbu was born on Christmas Day in 1963 in Tambanum village. When Joseph was eight years old his father died and he was taught to carve by his mother's brother, Arnold Mundo.
He is now an eminent master carver known for monumental ceremonial carvings such as roof finials and masks. Many of his recent works are original carvings inspired by traditional myths.
In 1995 Joseph spent six months in residence at Stanford University as part of a group of twelve master carvers from the Sepik River. They created a garden of monumental sculpture in the university grounds. His works can be found in private collections in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
