Jane Wena
Chimbu,
Jane Wena, from the Chimbu region of Papua New Guinea, was born in 1971. She is employed as a graphic designer by the Post Courier, Papua New Guinea's principal newspaper. She has worked for ten years as an artist in graphite and pen and ink, the latter is her favourite medium. The theme of her work relates to the Chimbu and neighbouring Huli cultures.
She has struggled as a woman artist in a country where men are favoured for opportunities. Jane was encouraged by Marion Strucke- Garbe, an anthropologist, who while living in Port Moresby nurtured a number of women artists by creating a space within her home for them to paint on a regular basis. Since returning to Germany Dr Strucke-Garbe has arranged several exhibitions which were very successful.
Jane has exhibited at Alcheringa Gallery since 2004.
