Kaua Gita
Iatmul Korogo Village, Sepik River,
Kaua was born in Korogo Village in 1964. He began to carve when he was fifteen, learning from his father and other carvers in the village. Korogo Village with its splendid Haus Tambaran has a strong ceremonial life. Kaua was commissioned by the elders to carve the finials for the roof of this building.
In a village where traditional carving skills are highly valued and many men carve, Kaua is among the select few designated as a master carver. As a senior carver in the village Kaua teaches many of the young boys, even carving gift pieces for them to encourage their progress. His work has been exhibited in Australia, Canada and the United States.
