Herman Kandimbu
Iatmul Tambanum Village, Middle Sepik River,
Herman Kandimbu was born in Tambanum Village in 1962. He learned to carve with his father. His work has been somewhat influenced by his slightly older brother Joseph who was a carver in residence at Stanford University in 1994. Joseph returned from overseas with imagery of Rodin's Thinker which he had seen in California. In response to this Herman, who has never left Tambanum Village, created his own powerful rendition of this epic sculpture in solid walnut.
His carvings always highly skilled also frequently are reflections of day to day village life.
