Edward Dumoi
Iatmul Palembei Village, Middle Sepik,
Edward Dumoi was born in Palembei Village in 1972. Coming from a large family of exceptional carvers, he began at an early age to learn from his father. As well as major ceremonial carvings, Edward is recognised for the creation of sculptures inspired by life in the village, such as a kitten in pursuit of a ball or a dog suckling her puppy.
He recently created a major sculpture of the Prime Minister
of Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael Somare, which can be seen
in the online catalogue on this site for Voices & Visions.
Dumoi constantly pushes boundaries, even creating non traditional ceremonial regalia such as the Cat Mask used to welcome members of Alcheringa's field trip in the spring of 2008.
His work can be found in international collections in Australia, Canada and the United States.
