Gickmai Kundun was born in Ondomondo Village, Simbu Province, in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. He is one of the South Pacific’s most renowned metal sculptors and graphic artists, having exhibited extensively outside as well as inside PNG, and is very active in teaching and promoting other PNG artists. His work often reflects contemporary social issues.

Gickmai began teaching at the National Art School in Port Moresby after graduating from there in 1976. He has been invited to participate in many pan-Pacific artists’ gatherings, including the Maori Painters’ Symposium and South Pacific Workshop in Auckland, New Zealand (1993) and the Te Wakatoi Symposium of Ingigenous Visual Arts in Rotorua, New Zealand (1995).
