Zacharias Waybenang was born in Kambot Village in 1933. He was taught to carve by his father and was one of the first artists in Kambot to transfer the mythic stories painted on bark to carvings on the buttress roots of trees. During his lifetime Zacharias has developed a unique personal style and works from his hand are treasured for their conceptual originality as well as their technical brilliance.
