Hailans to Ailans (meaning "Highlands to Islands" in Tok Pisin) is a groundbreaking exhibition of contemporary art and ideas from Papua New Guinea, one of the most bioculturally diverse countries in the world. Through spectacular wood and metal sculpture, weaving, painting, and performance, the indigenous artists in this catalogue explore questions about colonization and exchange, tradition and innovation, cultural and environmental sustainability, and the nature of identity in a fast-changing world.
This 80-page catalogue in full colour includes artwork, artist interviews, an introduction by Rebecca Hossack (Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery), essays by Elaine Monds (Alcheringa Gallery), Carol Mayer (Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia), Michael Mel (University of Goroka), Pamela Rosi (Bridgewater State College), and Nicolas Garnier (University of Papua New Guinea), as well as artist biographies and notes. Exhibition curated by Dr. Pamela Rosi and Dr. Michael Mel.
