This rectangular Coast Salish design is a contemporary rendition of an old Coast Salish carved combed. Coast Salish combs were used for combing wool for weaving. Graphic interpretations of this carved comb design have also created by Stan Greene and Susan Point. For my rendition, I decided to change the design areas above and below the serpent heads. I also wanted to retain the more natural brown hues characteristic of old, patinated Coast Salish carvings. After years of admiring the original carved comb, I concluded that the artist of the original comb intended the positive u-shapes formed between the crescents and trigons to evoke serpentine motion. Like the Sisuitl in Kwa-kwa-ka-wakw mythology, double headed serpents are also important in Coast Salish spiRITUALity. Many double headed animals are also considered to be very powerful because of their extraordinary nature.
