Some background info on this commission:
This totem pole was commissioned early this spring by a collector in Ontario as a replacement for an ancient Tlingit pole on her property that had been destroyed by vandals. Working closely with her daughter who lives here in Victoria, Alcheringa engaged Calvin Hunt and John Livingston to recreate her pole, this time in Kwakwaka'wakw style. Bear, Killerwhale, Raven, Human, and Eagle are the figures represented.
The client made an important decision to have Eagle put atop the pole rather than Raven, who had crowned the Tlingit pole. The property where this totem will stand has an eagle's nest. When eaglets were born to the nest a few years ago, they were tagged to track their flight paths. One eaglet was named after Mrs. Hewitt, 92, who commissioned this pole. As this eagle now flies far and wide, the eagle atop the totem, which represents her, has come home to roost.
