With cuneiFORM-LINE, I want to find a MEDIAtional middle ground between text and TEXTile. With TEXTiles in the form of woven blankets, Coast Salish people of the past created a form of currency and mnemonic devices which complimented the oral tradition in documenting events within Coast Salish communities. Coast Salish carvings also served similar purposes.
Designed about a decade ago when I was in the midst of wanting to accept literacy on my own terms as a contemporary Coast Salish person, this design depicts the joining of the lower case letter “i” with the Coast Salish design elements of a trigon and crescent. Within the lower case letter “i,” a subtle face can be perceived which symbolizes a member of a Coast Salish community perpetuating culture through the oral tradition.
