"In the River's Inlet Tribe the legend tells of four brothers of a powerful chief who were able to kill the great cannibal spirit from the North-End-of-the-World, BAXWBAKWALANUXSIWE. In doing so they were bestowed with the first Hamat'sa (cannibal) dance. The father of the young men, after burning the cannibal, blew into the ashes of the fire and announced that they would transform into the biting insects of the world, mainly the mosquito. The mosquito, craving human blood, is our reminder that the cannibal's spirit is alive and will always be around to possess new initiates who would be initiated into the powerful Hamat'sa society."
