"My Coast Salish ancestors created a cultural vision in which humans and animals were acknowledged as being vitally animated by lIFe. In this cultural vision, animals were believed to be humans in another form. Because of this belief, it was sometimes necessary for humans to attempt to see the world through the eyes of animals, and to empathize with the sacrificial dEATh which animals made in order to feed human lIFe. Through song, my Coast Salish ancestors thanked and spiRITUALLY acknowledged the sanctity of the the Salmon People.
In this circular Coast Salish design, four human faces and four salmon faces are depicted. Through visual punning, the eyes of the the four humans are also the eyes of the four salmon, while the curved crescents defining the salmon heads also define the noses on two of the human faces. The orange circle in the center of the design simultanously symbolizes salmon mEAT, a salmon egg, and a circular human mouth singing the Song of Salmon People."
