'In the Iatmul area of the Middle Sepik this carving speaks about the land.
If we argue or (have a) dispute about land we (might) use a knife for fighting which has been carved by a coconut. When we have discussions about land we look for this bird (white cockatoo) to help.
To take over land we may need to fight and we may use a spear. Then others may use the spear to fight us. In the end if a man has no pigs to buy land he will lose it. The pig is the main means for us to buy a woman, land or a lake. This piece is carved from a very strong wood (semi-petrified) so that it will last to teach our children land customs.'
-Kaua Gita describes the design of this carving and its meaning.
