With the head of a pig and the tail of a fish, Bukduma is an unusual mythological creature. It is huge in size and fierce of expression, but is actually very friendly. The creature dwells only in the Sepik River, the longest river in Papua New Guinea, where it destroys and rebuilds the banks of this winding waterway. This task is the sole responsibility of the obedient and hardworking Bukduma. Like a bulldozer and its operator, Bukduma is controlled by one person only, a woman.

Bukduma may attack the riverbank villages once in a long while, if commanded to do so by the woman for some reason, but taking lives is not his business, nor is it that of his controller. Mainly, Bukduma and his controller are known to be hardworking friends engaged in the destroying and rebuilding of the Sepik River, the longest river in Papua New Guinea.

People in the region are aware of the task before the hardworking and dedicated partners, so they do not speak to them or become cross with their behavior.
