"This painting is about traditional shell money, once the common currency of the Solomons. I chose to use shell money as a subject because while it is still in use it is frequently misinterpreted. During the headhunting days, shell money was used to settle conflicts between two parties. It was a way of showing respect and fairly compensating for wrongdoing. It was also used for bride-price, given from one tribe to purchase a bride from another. Shell money was passed down through the family traditionally from mother to daughter. Nowadays, it is mass produced and it has lost its significance. It is sold in bulk and given out as souvenirs because it is pretty. I hope on the one hand that this painting will serve as a reminder of the true value of shell money, and in the broader sense will capture the importance of maintaining the culture in print."
