"Fishing has always been an important daily activity in the Solomon Islands. A fisherman is one of the most respected positions within a community and each group of travellers will have contained these men who often, in turn, lead the new community. On the day of a fishing trip, it is an honour to be of the selected few who are chosen as the skillful fishermen that go out in search of the catch. The fishermen will head out to sea in light canoes in search of the bonito tuna feeding grounds. Once the schools of tuna are found, the fishermen will lay their nets in a narrow passage nearby. They will proceed back out to the school and lower themselves into the water. Using palm leaves, they will slowly drive the school toward the netting and, once there, gather the netting and their catch for the day. In this sense, the trap is the corralling of the fish, but also the trap is set for the fishermen to be caught by the dangerous elements of their job such as storms, sharks, currents and other unpredictable factors."
