Artist's Statement

"This design is originally derived from an 8 inch carved maple spindle whorl, which was collected on Vancouver Island circa early 1900s. To me personally, when it was commissioned by my new friends and owners of Coastal Peoples Fine Arts Gallery, I felt that it represented freedom in love and the gifts that it brings. With the ring in the very centre it represents eternal love and marriage. To distinguish the difference between the male and female, I put a labret in the lower lip in the face of the eagles wing joint, and put ovals in the females wing feathers. In contrast, for the male, I gave him a little beard in the face of the eagles wing joint and put trigon (or dart) shapes in the males wing feathers. To me, this whole rendition represents to me HARMONY and faithfulness, because they mate for life. In their mating dance the eagles grasp on to one another while tumbling from the sky, one of the most majestic sights to see every time I see them. May this design bring blessing to you and your loved one. This is one fine example of what our creator has to show us in the life of the majestic eagle, that what they have is pure and innocent."

- Joe Wilson
