Artist Statement: Salmon Circle
In the spirit of spindle whorls, this contemporary Coast Salish design depicts a salmon in phases of it's spawning cycle. Salmon and spindle whorls have been integral to the perpetuation of Coast Salish cultures. Salmon have provided sustenance for Coast Salish people, while spindle whorls created the wool of wealth for Coast Salish people. The omission of a spindle hole in this design, as well as the subtle bleed from light to dark burgundy, symbolizes cultural change.
