Artist Statement: Feeding Hummingbirds
In the spirit of spindle whorls, this circular Coast Salish design depicts four feeding hummingbirds. Rufous hummingbirds, a species of hummingbird that migrates to Coast Salish territory in the spring from Mexico and heads back tHERE in the fall, are small hummingbirds drawn to the colour red when feeding on nectar. Hence the red colours of this design.
In my study of hummingbirds, I found that for the hummingbird feeders that contain a red tinted plastic or glass feeder to fill with sugary water, using a red food colouring is not necessary or healthy for Rufous hummingbirds because the red tint of the glass or plastic is sufficient to draw these tiny birds.
