Ake Lianga - The Chant

Artist Statement: "This piece represents a method used by the people of the Solomon Islands to communicate legends and stories from one generation to the next. By using chants as a means of communication, the legends take on a form that is both entertaining and educational for the future generations of Islanders. This chant specifically tells the legend of shark calling in the Eastern Solomon Islands. Legend says that when a person dies, his soul/spirit is reincarnated within a shark as they believe that their ancestors come from the sea."
