Artist Statement: This painting refers to a story about how the sea turtle came to be in the sea. The turtle originally lived in a freshwater lake, which was drying up. A pair of birds told the turtle they would move him to a new lake by having him grasp a stick in his mouth which they held onto while they flew him through the air to the new location. They warned the turtle not to look down or speak, lest he be released from the stick and fall. This he heeded for some time. However, when the birds flew over the sea en route to the new lake, the turtle was amazed at its beauty and size and let out an exclamation. Inevitably, he plummeted into the sea and has been there ever since.
