A deep knowledge of the art of other cultures - and the way it relates to our own - informs Jewell's own elegant and allusive work. As Artist - in - Residence at the British Museum, Jewell had access to the historical riches of the museum collection. A highly skilled printmaker, many of her exquisite feathered works in this exhibition were inspired by the colourful headdresses worn by the Highlanders of Papua New Guinea.
Featured also in wood are graceful sculptured birds by master carvers of Papua New Guinea. Jack Bai and Joseph Sikin bring their carved Birds of Paradise and carved Hornbills respectively to fly alongside charming Water Birds by Andrew Busha. The Kingfishers of Australia will be in attendance in serigraph form created by Aboriginal artists from the Tully River in Northern Australia. Also, birds from our own Northwest Coast as seen graphically through the eyes of Coast Salish Artists lessLIE, Chris Paul and Dylan Thomas.
