In the Middle Sepik, finely carved lime containers like this one are given to young men at initiation. Lime is dabbed onto the tongue to alleviate the bitterness of betel nut, a mild stimulant, intoxicant, and appetite suppressant. This piece is unusual in that it combines a lime container and stopper (the cane segment and human endpiece) with a lime stick (hidden, projecting from the rooster & crocodile handle).
