This mouthpiece is clenched between the teeth of a dancer wearing a tatanua mask as part of the performance called vanis. Hornbill mouthpieces like this one, carved or using actual hornbill beaks, are used in a variety of malagan performances. Dancers often mimic the movements of birds.
