Marumarua are involved in rainmaking magic. Secrets of these practices, which occur in special locations, are passed from father to son.
Matthew Salle tells the story depicted:
"This man went hunting cuscus (possum) in the bush. A snake fell off a tree and bit his chin. Surprised, he put his arms out like this."
This piece and Tangla seem to be different incarnations of the same malagan. Here, however, the flying fish has been replaced by a snake. Similar pieces show a bird-fish hybrid in the same position. Such variations make precise identification, interpretation, and classification of malagan imagery difficult, even for New Irelanders.
