"This necklace was inspired by a Haida Shaman's collar depicted in the book, People of the Totem. The original Haida piece was partially made from 'bone game' sticks, along with a number of different creatures.

It is difficult to describe why I felt compelled to carve this piece. I have always been fascinated by Shamanic objects and like to capture the essence of such things. For me, they portray the mystery and power of history.

Looking for balance, I included aspects - spirits - shadows - figures - from the four realms of the Native cosmos (sky, sea, spirit, and mortal). I will not try to describe each piece; each has its own story, traditionally and personally.

Traditionally, when a Shaman performs rituals, he displays his spirit helpers in the forms of masks, rattles, charms, etc. This is a contemporary piece, but I hope it captures other interests, eyes and good spirits."
